toddlers at dinner

Me: tasting a bowl of soup I'm making for dinner to test it
Jonas: "What is that?"
Me: "Soup"
Jonas: very excited - "I want some soup!"
Me: surprised that he actually wants a dinner food, I get him a bowl of the exact same soup
Jonas: looking at the bowl of soup in disgust "I wanted soup!"
Me: "This is the same soup you just saw me eating"
Jonas: "But I wanted nothing in it!"
Me: "There is nothing else in it, just the soup"
Jonas: "I want nothing in it!"
Me: "Did you want soup?"
Jonas: "Yes!"
Me: "Well this is soup, I don't know what you want. Is the soup you want in a bowl?" In case we are not on the same page.
Jonas: "Yes. I don't want the apples (potatoes), carrots, or meat" (so all the visible ingredients)
Me: "So you want a bowl of just the soup juice?"
Jonas: "No, I don't want that. I just want soup!"
Savannah gives Jonas a bowl of just plain water, which he drinks.
Me: offering Jonas a spoon with a tiny bit of ground beef "Jonas, how about you try this little piece of ground beef?"
Jonas: surprisingly, tries the ground beef "This browned beef-es is good, I though it was goin' to be meat". And that's all he ate from the soup he really thought he wanted.
